Why Do Small Businesses Fail?

Whether you own a business now or you plan on owning one, there’s probably a question that passes your mind here and there.  “Why Do Small Businesses Fail?”  Businesses fail for a reason, it’s plain and simple and there are so many factors on why a business fails.  Having no motivation, for example, is one of them, but let’s take a look at why most business fail in today’s world.  99% of the time you can prevent it, if you know what you’re doing.

No motivation at all -  Are you starting your business because you want to make money or are you starting it because you’re passionate about your work?  If you’re starting it to make money, you’re already on the wrong path.  Sure, it’s nice to make money but don’t start up a payday loan place just because there might be money in it.  Instead, take what you love to do and turn it into a business.  You can turn any hobby into a money making venture.  Put your heart into it, it will pay off in the long run!

No plan at all – Are you starting your business with no plan at all?  If this sounds like you, you’re already off on the wrong foot.  A successful business has a great game plan.  Research is going to be your best friend.  If you don’t know how to research properly, take some classes.  You’re not going to want to open up shop somewhere were there’s no demand and no people that want your product.  If there’s 20 pizza joints within a few miles, maybe it’s best you don’t open up one around there.  Get my hint?

Don’t go in the red- If you have no money, please don’t think about starting a business.  Businesses are expensive to start up unless you’re going the online route, then you’re not going to need as much capital.  But if you’re going to want to lease, hire employees, etc, you’re soon going to find yourself in so much debt, you may not think straight.  Make sure you always save at least one to two years worth of backup expenses, just in case things fail.  You’ll thank yourself later.

Location is your best friend – I can’t stress this enough to anyone.  Your location is going to be your most important thing when you’re opening up your business.  If you’re going to open up shop online, you’re not going to have to worry about location as much but you’ll have to worry more about your competitors.  When you’re choosing your location for your business, there are so many factors to consider:

  • Know who you’re going to market to.
  • Know the area.  How many cars drive by?  How many people walk by?
  • Are there are a lot of competitors in your area?
  • How do other businesses do in the area?

It’s very important that you do as much research as you can on your location because this is where your business is going to stand and you won’t want to pick a poor spot and find yourself failing down the road because of a bad spot.

The main thing here is as long as you do your research and you have passion, your business has a very good chance at succeeding.  Use common sense and your business can be running for years to come!
