Why Do Small Businesses Fail?

If you’re thinking about opening up your own business or you’re currently running one, the question that might come across your mind every once in a while is “Why Do Small Businesses Fail?”  Well, I’d love to give you one good answer but there are actually many reasons on why businesses fail.  Are you going to be one of them?  Let’s hope not.

Stupid spending.  You have to treat your business like your everyday life.  If you’re buying $500 printers and $3,000 computers and you don’t really need them, you’re already down the path to disaster.  You have to realize that you should be spending money only on what you need, not want.  When you do want to purchase something, make sure that you look for the best deal possible.

Starting out with too much debt.  When you start up your business, do you want to start off with no debt or $100,000 in debt?  The more debt you start off with, the more likely you’re going to fail.  What happens if you don’t make a profit in your first year and you lose $25,000?  Well, let’s take a look at the debt now.  You’re at $125,000 considered to the guy who started off with no debt.  He’s at $25,000.

Bad location.  Most businesses don’t take the time necessary to pick out a perfect location.  If you’re a business that doesn’t need foot traffic then obviously, this doesn’t involve you but if you’re a video game store, clothing store, etc, you need to worry about your location.  Some business owners are too cheap and don’t pay top dollar for that foot traffic.  You may find that the more you spend, the more you may make profit wise.  Don’t be cheap with your location, it may come back and haunt you.

Awful working skills.  When you own your own business, it owns you.  This means you can’t just kick back and watch your employees run your business for you.  They don’t care about your profits.  They just want their $10 a hour.  If you’re not putting your heart into this business, it may not be around next week.

Your business plan stinks.  This one goes alongside with the location.  Many business owners don’t care about their business plan or they simply make a sloppy one that just doesn’t work out.  Not only that, some owners may find that they have unrealistic goals of making one million dollars in the first month.  You have to be realistic!

Don’t market enough.  When you have your business up and running, you’re not going to have people coming to you.  If you have a poor marketing plan, you’re going to have a poor business.  Do you think Coke is where they are today because of no marketing?  No, test your marketing campaigns because you’ll find that some work better than others.

There are so many reasons small businesses fail.  This is just a sample on why many small businesses do fail.  If you know you’re not part of these groups mentioned above, you’re going to have a great chance at succeeding.  In the mean time, focus on your business, work hard and good things will come.
