Tips to Create a Marketing Plan
Some might argue that your marketing plan may be your most important part of your business. When it comes to marketing plan, there’s no doubt in my mind that you should have one. Without one, it’s like going on a hike without a map. You’re just going to get lost. Creating a marketing plan doesn’t happen over night. Instead, you should site down for hours at a time and create a plan that you can believe in.
Can you market this product?
Sometimes when we start to think of things such as inventions, we want to believe it’ll work. A lot of the times, you’ll find out that your idea stinks when you bring it up to family members. If the product or idea is already out there and it’s working then you’re probably going to see some success if you market it properly. If you’re looking to market something new, make sure you get a ton of opinions outside of your own mind before you even think of making that plan. Remember, a video rental store with a spa isn’t going to work.
Let’s keep the marketing plan easy and simple.
A marketing plan doesn’t necessarily have to be advanced. Instead, you need to lay it out so that you can read it in simple terms.
- You’re going to want to include a monthly budget you want to set aside for advertising.
- You’ll want to know how you’re going to advertise. Remember, advertising is going to be your biggest friend.
- You’re going to want to identify your customers.
- You’ll want to project income. It’s always best to think low so that when the numbers do come, you’re not over estimating and discouraging yourself.
Start researching your market.
No matter what you sell in this world, you’re always going to have a demographic. Chances are that a 80 year old woman isn’t going to want a Nintendo Wii gaming system. The best place to generally find your demographic is by simply checking stats online or even calling up some manufactures. They will be more than willing to help you, since they want you to sell their product properly.
Set your goals.
Setting your goals is probably the best thing you can do when it comes to your marketing plan. When it comes to setting your goals, make sure you’re never afraid to set them too high. It’s always best to write out what you want from a year from now, five years from now, etc. Stick to these goals and write down what you’ll need to do if you want to reach those goals.
Create graphs.
Graphs are generally the best way to go when you’re looking to see how much you’ll be spending per month. If you’re looking for funding, graphs are always the best way to go. This way, you can show the prospective investors with simple pie charts, etc. Use these graphs to show your plans such as budgeting, how much you’re going to spend with advertising, etc.
How are you going to advertise?
Advertising is going to be the most important part of your business. Hopefully, once you get big enough, word of mouth will spread. In your marketing plan, you’ll want to list some ways you’re going to advertise. Is it going to be through newspaper ads, TV, radio, etc. Write down how much you’re willing to spend and what you want out of these ads. Do you want 5 sales from one radio ad?, etc.
By now, you should have a great understanding on how you should build a successful marketing plan. There’s a lot more to it than just this. I suggest you go out there and read books, visit websites, and ask current business owners on how they created their marketing plan. A marketing plan takes time and can’t be done overnight.
