Tips for Direct Mail Advertising

There are many great ways to advertise for a small business.  There is everything from magazine to newspaper to radio advertising.  There are several great ways to spread the word of your business although one is becoming more and more popular.  Direct mail advertising has become a huge hit for many businesses and is allowing them to grow, spread the word and is bringing in more customers.  If you’ve been thinking about testing out direct mail advertising you may want to keep a couple things in mind.

Not for everyone – Remember, direct mail isn’t for everyone so don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work well from the beginning or if it hasn’t in the past.  How can you tell if it will work for you?

-Does your advertisement look spammy?  If so, it may be thought of as junk mail and may be pitched immediately.

-Write the letter and mail directly to the home owner.  This will look personal and you will most likely get a better look at then one that isn’t written out personally.

-Find ways to target your audiences.  There are certain ways to target people that are for example 25, male and college students if you want to.  Type in who you’re looking to target and it will give you a list of people that you’re describing.  This will eliminate sending to people that you don’t want to and instead target each person you’re looking to advertise for.  Websites like Salesgenie are great for this.

-Create a nice looking flyer with your logo on it so you don’t have to spend a lot of money yourself with postcards and other expensive items.  Flyers are very affordable and still get the job done.

-Try doing a small specialty advertisement gift along with your letter.  Little things like refrigerator magnets and pads of paper will really draw their attention.

There are many different ways to improve your direct mail advertising.  Just think of what you’d like as a customer to make sure you get positive feedback.  Don’t make your letters look like spam but instead really professional.  Test it out, see how it works and depending on your sales find out if you would like to continue or not.

I use Salesgenie for my insurance business. They give you 100 free leads free to test their service, and also do my direct mail for me (but it’s a postcard).
