Starting a Snow Plowing Business

The snow season is fast upon us, and if you’re looking for a little extra cash this upcoming winter season, there’s no better way than to shovel driveways, as well as sidewalks.  Thousands of people need this job done, and there’s a lot of money to be made!

Start your business plan early – Since this will be a seasonal job, you’re going to want to start this plan early.  You’re going to most likely need a truck to plow, as well as a snow blower.  As you can see, the start up may be a little expensive, but after you buy these items, you’ll only need gas and manpower to run your equipment.

Know your demographic - When you’re ready to launch your business, who are you going to target?  Are you going to target everyone?  or are you going to target a particular crowd?  If I was to start a business, I would love to target the older crowds, since they are getting older.  The older crowds, as well as commercial buildings are lucrative, when it comes to making money.

Know your competition - Offer something to the customers that no other business offers.  Since many people stick with who has worked with them before, offer a 5% discount, or first time free, or something along those lines.  If you can, get people to sign a seasonal contract.

Get verified – Many people don’t like to do business with those that aren’t listed with the Better Business Bureau, etc.  The more credentials you can receive, the more they will trust you.  Many are afraid of those run by night businesses, and I don’t blame them!

Know what people want - Every owner is going to be different when it comes to snow plowing.  Some will want their driveways plowed at six inches, while others want it plowed right away.  You’re going to have to memorize this, and do it as early as you can to avoid making others angry.  It’s also best to work in a close area with all of your customers, so that you don’t have to travel 50 miles to go to each other’s house.

A snow plowing business can make you a lot of money during the winter season.  If you can get good enough at it, it may pay for all the bills all year long, you may never know.  Try some of these tips to get on the right track today!
