Small Business Advertising Tips

Find the perfect business credit card for your business.

Advertising is the most crucial part of your business when you’re stating off.  This of course, is how you’re going to get your customers.  After awhile, if you have a great business, word of mouth will spread, which will be your best advertising route.  Since word of mouth advertising is going to be tough when you first start off, there are so many advertising ideas out there, some business owners don’t even know where to start.

Get to know your audience – Knowing your audience is going to determine how you advertise.  If you’re selling baby toys, it’s probably best you don’t advertise in the Wall Street Journal.   Instead, you should look for publications that target expecting mothers or families that just had a baby.  There’s a publication out there for everyone.  If you’re unsure of your audience, try and do some research online to see who you should reach out too.

How much do you want to spend? – Advertising can be expensive and if you have a smaller budget, you’re not going to be able to do as much but if you’re a bigger company with more money, you can potentially reach out to more people.  Generally, the more you spend, the more you’re going to reach out to.  Get a piece of paper or use some software to determine how much you should spend for advertising.  Don’t go too cheap because if you go this route, you may find yourself shutting your doors quicker than you think.

Test, test, and test- Testing is going to be your best friend.  When you first start of advertising, try as many avenues as possible to see what works.  Make sure you always track your advertising.  If you advertise in a newspaper for example, use a coupon code or place a coupon in that paper.  That way, if they bring in that coupon, you’ll know exactly where it came from.  Make sure try all the major media outlets such as newspaper ads, magazines, classifieds, radio, etc.  The list can go on and on.

Hire if you have too – There are lots of services out there that can help you write an ad.  Some of the good writers are going to cost you but you may find it’s well worth it.  Creating an ad may sound easy but there’s so much to it, you’ll make your head spin.  If you think you can’t write a great ad, I would advise that you look into finding someone that fits within your budget.

There’s so much to advertising, I can’t just write about it all within this little post.  These tips alone should give you a great idea on how much you want to spend and how you want to use it.  Remembering, testing is going to be your best friend.  If you don’t test, you’re not going to know where people are coming from and what works.  Like a flower, businesses take time to grow.  You can’t expect it to blow up overnight.  Have patience and put your heart into it and your business should bloom successfully.
