Protecting Your Business in a Down Economy

The United States is in a rough economy and if you can survive and strive during this economy, you can survive during any rough times.  There are some things you should know when protecting your business during an economy.  Some businesses don’t need to adapt but some need to.  I’m going to provide you with a few pointers on how you can protect your small business during rough times.

Stay positive – It’s not hard to become negative when the economy is rough.  Usually, when you start to think negative, you’re going to want to go down that road.  Instead of feeling bad about yourself, why not think about the future of your business and how you can make it even better?

Keep in contact – Depending on what kind of business you run, make sure you always keep in contact with former customers.  Send them e-mails, send out coupons and let them know about what’s going on.  Even if you’re a one time deal like roofing or something that comes once every 20 years, you never know if they will hand off those coupons to someone they may know.

Study the market – If people aren’t spending, find out what you need to do to get people in the door.  Do you need to hold a free BBQ in hopes they buy something?  Do you need to offer some crazy sale where people come pushing down the doors?  Study your local area and see what you need to do to get some of your customer’s money in your pocket.

Are you the problem?  Sometimes you’ll find that some businesses strive no matter what.  You might have to look back at yourself and see if your company is to blame.  Do you have good customer service?  Do you have competitive prices?  Make sure you’re studying the competition.  Always take the #1 guy and make yourself ten times better.

Don’t listen to the news – The news will always be negative and sure, when the economy is bad, the news will eat it up.  They can make anything good sound bad.  What I would recommend is that you take my first pointer and think positive and think of great ways to grow your business.

GROW the business – If you’re marketing right now, I bet you can do ten times better.  Go out there and start testing other avenues.  Start looking at other ways of bringing customers in.  You may find down the road that radio ads will work better than the ads you’re running now.

Network- No matter how bad the economy is, it’s never too early to start networking.  Start attending conferences and handing out business cards.  The more people you know, the more likely you can reach another deal, learn about the market or possibly start a partnership.

Down times are always hard.  It’s important that you keep your head high and think of all the bright spots.  People are still going to spend and people will still want your product.  Sure, you may have to work harder but just think about it, if you can survive this, you can survive anything!
