Offline Vs. Online Businesses

The technology in our world today is incredible and it’s only going to continue to get better.  If you’re thinking about starting a business in the near future, you may want to consider an online business instead of an offline business.  Even though they both have their own upsides and downsides, I’m going to show you what the pros and cons are for each type of business.  By the end of the read, hopefully you have a better idea on what you may want to start.

Offline Business Pros

  • Instant gratification:  Consumers love getting things in their hand right away.  If they can buy it now, they will do it.
  • Face to face with customers:  Unlike the Internet, with a brick and mortar type shop, you can actually talk with your customers face to face.
  • Have a store front: Sometimes you may find it hard for people to reach you on the Internet.  If you have a popular area, you may find it easier to find customers because of your store front.

Online Business Pros

  • Save your money:  With an online business, you’re not going to need a store front or a building.  You may be able to just run the business straight out of your house, it all depends on how big you get.
  • No dealing with customers: Instead of dealing with customers face to face, you only have to deal with them over the phone or via e-mail.
  • Less employees to hire: With a storefront, you’re going to have to have someone in your store during your hours.  When you’re online, you can set a time when you’re going to ship out packages.
  • Reach billions:  With the Internet, you’re reaching the world.  With your brick and mortar shop, you’re only reaching customers within a certain radius.

Each business is a whole different realm.  If you plan on working online, you’re going to have to learn about search engine optimization, ppc (pay per click marketing) and other ways to market.  There are so many ways to market online!  If you plan on taking the online route, make sure that you know what you’re doing.

Just like the offline business, you’re going to have to research your market, your location and know your customers.  If you end up screwing up, it’s going to be more costly than an online business because of the leasing fees you have to pay, etc.

Both of them have big upsides and downsides and who knows, if you become good enough with your business, you can turn an offline business into an online business or vice versa, it’s all up to you.  My only word of advice to you is to make sure you know what you’re doing before you make a big jump by leasing a building or paying a ton or money to program a website.
