Maintain good relationships

Owning a small business can be a bit of a challenge in a down economy, especially if you provide a good or service that is not recession proof; therefore, finding a way to get your name out there is of utmost important. With a small investment of time and effort, you can network your way to a modest level of success. Believe it or not, your current customer base may be the best place for you to start. If you have happy customers, you should definitely ask them for referrals. If they have been satisfied with you in the past, they may be more than willing to pass your name on to their friends and family. Better yet, you can ask them for the names of people you can contact on your own! If you maintain good relationships with your current clients, you will be able to always expand your customer base.

Join a Chamber of Commerce

Most large cities and even small towns have a chamber of commerce that function to bring businesses and local residents together. Once you get involved, you will find a plethora of personal and professional opportunities available for you to get the name of your business out there. Whether you volunteer for the local chili cook-off, do a citywide mailing to members, or sponsor a holiday food drive, you will be working to develop relationships with the other chamber participants. Before long, your small business may become a household name!

Form a business Co-op

One of the best things you can do as a small business owner is look for other businesses in the area they might complement the product or service you provide. Then, form a partnership that will benefit both you and your customers. For example, if you provide printing services, why not join forces with a sign maker or an advertising firm? Anything you can do provide your customers a “one-stop-shop”will clearly separate you from your competition. Also, by partnering with another business, you are opening each other up to each other’s network.
