How to Start An Auto Repair Shop

With so many business opportunities out there, as a part of our “How to start a business series”, today, we are going to focus on how you can start up your very own auto repair shop.

Write up a business plan

Like any business and I will tell you this for anything, you have to write up your very own business plan.  How are you going to market this particular shop?  How many people are you going to hire?  What kind of competition is going to be your area?  These are all questions you need to ask yourself and as long as you’re prepared and you stand up above the rest, you shouldn’t have a problem.

What kind of knowledge do you have?

When it comes to the car market, there are hundreds of cars.  Are you going to know how to work on every make and model or are you going to work on particular brands?  If you don’t know how to work on particular brands, you may want to find extra help.  You have to remember that an employee is an asset and he/she is going to help your business grow and make money.  Never be cheap when it comes to help because if you have a great business model running, you can make money.

Look for the perfect location

When it comes down to opening up a repair shop, check with your local zoning office.   You’re going to find that auto shops are probably part of the industrial zoning and it makes sense.  A fast food chain doesn’t want to be next to a loud and noisy repair shop all day.  Start scouting areas and do most of your research when it comes to location.  If you ask any successful auto shop owner, you’ll find that most of their business comes from word of mouth so road frontage may not be that important if you have a great business.

How are you going to be different than the rest?

An auto repair shop is pretty general.  Sit back, grab a notepad and ask yourself how you’re going to be different than the rest.  Are you going to offer discounts?  Are you going to have cheap prices?  You have to be unique if you want to survive in any business.  Once you get that customer through your door, show them that you care and work your butt off to keep them coming back.  No matter what kind of shop you have, you’re going to have repeat business because people always have problems or need that everyday maintenance done on their vehicles.

When it comes down to starting up a shop, your start up costs are going to vary on your location, how big you want to be, etc.  Obviously, this little piece is going to be a stepping stone to getting your business started.  Take your time, write up a business plan and watch your business grow.
