How to Start a Used Clothing Store

Used clothing shopYou want to start a used clothing store?  That’s great because not only are you going to do good for the community, you’re going to help others get clothes that they couldn’t afford elsewhere.

Now, I know there’s most likely going to be competition in your area such as Goodwill, and The Salvation Army, but don’t let that stop you from opening up a used clothing store in your area.  Many mom and pop shops are successful in doing so, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t be either.

If you’re considering opening up a shop, here are a few tips that you should take into consideration.

Find the perfect location first and foremost: You don’t want to necessarily be next to another competitor, but you want to be in a middle class area.  You’ll find that if you pop up a store in a lower end district, you may not get the donations that you need.  It’s best to target the middle class districts, where people are more than willing to donate, and you’re going to get a decent inventory.

Get your taxes in order: Since people are going to want a tax break when they donate items, you’ll want to meet with an accountant in your area that will be able to help you with your taxes, and setting up a system.  Every time someone donates, you’ll want to have them fill out a form, so that they can hand it over come tax time.

Marketing is key at the beginning: Since you’ll have a used clothing store, and you can’t really just go out, and purchase your inventory, you’ll want to get the word out, and potentially hold a clothing drive.  A great way to do this is have a huge party, or potentially get a hold of the media.  Have people come, donate, and in return, maybe they can get pizza, soda, and more.  It’s up to you to be creative in order to get a nice inventory.

Create the shop: The nice thing about a used clothing store is that it doesn’t have to be fancy.  You can have simple clothing racks, and shelving.  People aren’t expecting a 5 star retail shop when they walk in.

Obviously, there’s going to be more than this, but hopefully I’m getting you on the right path to opening up a used clothing shop.  Make sure that you create your business plan the right way, and figure out a location.  This is something that you shouldn’t be cheap with.

It’s never to late to start considering a business.  Start your plan today, and let’s hope it succeeds!
