How to Start a Business During a Recession

Are you thinking about starting up your own small business during this recession?  If so, you may need to take a couple important steps into play.  Starting up a business during a recession can be risky but it could also be a huge hit, you never know.  So, if you’re looking start up your small business soon take a look at the steps you will need to take below.  These will guide you along the way and you will help you get your business up and running!

  • Write a business plan – This is the first step every small business owner will want to take.  Come up with a business plan that includes what you want to do, your plans of how you’ll be successful and all your marketing strategies.  This is the most important step and takes a lot of brain storming.  One good question to ask yourself is “How will I bet better than my competitors?”
  • Budgeting – Next, you’re going to want to figure out how you’ll do your budgeting.  This means, be as cheap as possible!  If you can, start your business in your home.  Get all cheap furniture and just the basic necessities that you’ll need to run your business.
  • What competition do you have? - Do your research and find out which competitors you have.  Lets say you’re a Best Buy business, your competitors were Circuit City, Media Play and Comp USA.  You all benefit customers in the same way by having the same products.  Although, how you will you be better than your competitors, what will you do that Best Buy did to stay #1?
  • Marketing is key – If you want your business to be heard, number one, and the biggest out there, you’re going to NEED to market.  Marketing is very important no matter how you do it.  You could start by using direct mail, magazine ads, newspaper ads, the radio, etc, as long as you have a plan!
  • Next, network – Now, you’re going to want to join your local Chamber of Commerce or local industry group.  This is an important step and can be very beneficial to you.
  • Customers are gold – Customers should be treated like gold, especially when times are hard.  To stay in business you will have to give them what they want, have good prices/business and treat them nicely.  Take them time to help them out and talk with them.

Starting a business during a recession may sound like a bad idea but it can be done!  As long as you have start up money, you’re cheap from the beginning and you have plans on how your business will benefit others and yourself, you’ll be on the right path.  Consider these step and tips above for guidance along the way.
