How to Start a Bar Business
So, you want to take the step in opening up your very own bar or pub, that’s great! It may sound like its easy when you place the idea in your head but you’ll find out that it is a lot of work but don’t let that stop you. If you let that stop you, this is one of the main reasons on why future business owners fail!
I’m going to give you some pointers on a few tips that can hopefully get you up and running on the right track. I’ll point you to some books, some places you can do research and more. A bar is very similar to a restaurant, pub or just about anything that serves alcohol or food.
Know your state rules and regulations
The first thing that you want to research before you even start is by figuring our your state and city’s regulations and rules when it comes to an alcohol license. You won’t want to open up a bar and find out you can’t serve drinks, who’s going to come to this? Hop online and find your city’s website and contact their permit division for more information.
Get a solid business plan formed
A liquor license can be expensive depending on where you live. Make sure that you know how much that is going to cost you. You’re going to want to factor in a lot more than that though. From your rent to your supplies, this is the main reason on why you want to start up a business plan. Consider these business software packages when looking to write one up for your business.
Location is key here!
Just like any business where you want patrons to walk in, you want to have a great location when it comes to a bar. You’re going to find with a bar that you’re going to get a lot of repeat customers. These are the ones that you want to treat like gold because they are going to keep coming back to get drinks. Location isn’t something you should look at overnight, make sure you invest a lot of time when it comes down to this process.
Think of a potential theme
Go ahead and drive by a bar in your area. If you have time, stop by and have a drink and even ask the bartender some questions about the business. Most owners are always willing to give up information on the area, the business, etc. The reason you’ll want to stop by is because you’ll want to see what kind of theme they have. You’ll want to consider one of these as well. Do you want a sports bar theme? a Irish pub theme? There are a lot of ideas out there for you to implement with your bar.
Know who to hire
When it comes to your bar, you’ll only want to hire the best. This is why I would recommend that you only hire those that have attended bar tending school. You won’t want to hire someone that doesn’t know what they are doing or one that has to constantly reference a book.
There is so much to consider when starting a bar and this post is only a slice of knowledge. I highly recommend that you check out the following books when it comes to opening up your own bar. Do your research, have fun and lets hope for a lot success!
