How to Start a Bakery

How to start a bakery businessIn this “how to start a..” series, we focus on how you can start up a bakery, and make it the biggest hit in town.  I’ll give you a few pointers on where you can start to do your research, so that you can get started in no time!

Get that business plan ready

Just like any business, you’re going to want to know what you’re going to do with this business.  How are you going to make money?  How big do you want your shop?  Where are you going to get supplies?  I could go on with the questions, but you get the point, I suppose.  It’s essential that you create a business plan, because without one, you’re already asking for failure.

Location is important

Like many businesses out there, location is always important, especially if you’re in the food or retail business.  If you’re running a service based business, this isn’t as important.  The thing you want to note when starting a bakery is where you want to locate it.  Take a look around at some of the successful bakeries in your area.  You’ll probably realize that a lot of them are located on a main street, or a place where people walk by on occasion.  If the city allows it, you can place patio tables and chairs out there, where they can eat.  This alone will draw in a lot of customers that may want to eat and try out your goodies.

What kind of bakery is this going to be?

There are a lot of bakery choices out there when it comes to setting one up.  The question today is, how do you want to run this place?  Are you going to good cakes?  donuts? bread?  You’ll have to write down a menu, and know who you’re going to cater too.  Will you supply weddings with cakes?  You have to find that niche, so that you stick out above the rest.

Who are you targeting in your city?

Each city is going to vary when it comes to opening up a bakery.  Are you going to open it up where the senior citizens hang out?  college kids?  The demographic is going to be important because your menu will be based on the people you’re serving.  Some items may be more appealing to someone that’s 70, rather than 22.

How many people do you need?

Staff is going to be another important issue when it comes to your bakery.  How many people are you going to employ?  You can’t just say yourself, because trust me, when it comes to a bakery, you’re going to need help.  What happens if you’re sick?  You can’t just close down shops, because that will most likely tick off your customers.  Picture what your staff is going to look like.

These are the steps that are essential when it comes to opening a bakery.  A bakery is going to be a lot different than most businesses out there.  This is why it’s important that you know what to do.  As long as you have a business plan put together, and you know what you want with your business, you should be okay.
