How to Get Free Publicity

When opening up a shop, you may be on a tight budget, and that’s okay.  When you’re looking to get free publicity, there are a million things that you can do out there, in order to get the word out without having to pay a dime.  Below, are a few tips that I use for my own personal business, and have worked great!

Join the website HARO

HARO is an amazing community that connects you with journalists.  You’ll basically add your name to a email list, and everyday, you’ll get queries from journalists looking for experts.  If you know that you can answer it, you can contact them directly, and tell them about yourself.  A majority of the time, you’ll be able to plug your website.

Contact the news directly with a story

Think of something creative that you’re going to do with your business.  The news doesn’t want to do a little blurb on some guy opening a restaurant, that’s too boring!  You want to make it unique, and there are so many ways that you can do so.   Think of your grand opening, and see how you can make it different from most.  I can’t think of any ideas, but I’m sure you can think of some off the top of your head.

Sponsor a local community event

I watch the news all the time, and every week, there’s a touching story on how a playground needs work, or a kid needs a new wheelchair.  Well, if you can offer your services, you can count on the news showing your name on the news.  Let’s say that you’re running a bakery.  If there’s a local shelter running short on food, you can cook them up some bread, etc, one day.  This works like a charm, and it’s win-win.  You’re helping the community, and your business!

Be the first with something

Once again, I’m going to include the news, because this is how news spreads fast.  No matter what kind of business you’re running, you can think of something that can be a first.  For example, let’s say you’re running a dry cleaner.  What if you offered guaranteed on time dry cleaning, or double your money back?  Be bold, and see how the media eats it up!

By now, you will most likely see that you have to get the media’s attention.  From the TV, to the radio, there are plenty of ways to get the word out.  Just be unique, know how to get the word out, and watch your business grow.
