How to Create a Dress Code at Work
If you have a business that is doing rather well and you want to start getting more serious, there are a few things you may be considering. You may be thinking about hiring more employees, getting an office building, or even something as simple as a dress code for your workers.
Dress codes are very important for certain businesses. Once a business developes and starts becoming more and more successful, we will want to really impress our higher up companies and corporations. Dress codes are important because they are more professional and look better than the daily attire of flip flops, tank tops and shorts.
If you’re really thinking about enforcing a dress code with your business, there are some ways to do gradually. Continue to read below and follow the tips recommended.
Create a plan – First, you’re going to want to think of a plan. Create a design that you like and talk to your employees about it. Lets say you’re working with credit card companies, your attire will be different than one as a factory worker. So take time to come up with a nice dress code that suits your business and see what your employees have to say about it.
Distinguish – Another thing you’re going to want to keep in mind is fairness. Make sure what you make men do women do as well and vise versa. Don’t make women wear khaki pants and allow men to wear jeans. You’re going to want to come up with an idea and distinguish what men and women will wear equally. Also, keep in mind that religions allow only certain things. If someone has a religion that says they can only wear skirts, keep this issue in mind. It is very important to talk to your employees and see if it is okay with them. So instead of banning everything but khaki pants, maybe consider khaki skirts as well.
Train managers- Once you have it all laid out, train your managers. Let them know why this will benefit the company and what they need to keep in mind to tell the other employees. Also, review how to enforce the policy and what you need to do if someone doesn’t follow it.
Make it understood – Don’t just simply talk to your employees, make it understood that they know what to wear. Make copies on the walls at work. Send them all home with a paper of the dress code, so they better understand the enforcement.
Enforcing a dress code isn’t as hard as you may think. Simply go over these tips above and talk it over with your employees. Maybe get some ideas from them so they don’t refuse or quit on you. Just most importantly make sure your rules are fair!
