How to Calculate Advertising Costs

When it comes to your business, you’re going to find that the only way that you can get people through your front door is simply by advertising.  Without advertising, you’re going to find that no one but yourself is going to know about your business.  When it comes time to calculate your advertising costs, there are some things that you have to keep in mind when you’re about to advertise for your business.

Know your area - Every city in the world is going to differ when it comes to advertising.  A New York City is going to be a lot more than say a small town in the middle of Kansas.  Depending on what kind of services you’re running, you’re going to want to look into rates for the major media outlets like newspapers, radio, etc.

What do you want? There are so many ways that you can advertise out there.  From the radio to the TV, you will want to know how to get your message across, and how you can spend the least amount of money.  This is where testing comes into play.   If you run ads with coupons, know where they are coming from.  If you get a great response, you’ll want to stick with it.

Know your demographic - Some demographics are harder to get a hold of when it comes to advertising your business. If you’re going to cater to younger kids with a service you’re offering, you may want to look into pricing, because it may be cheaper to advertise toward seniors rather than students.

Know what’s cheap for you - If you have a small mom and pop hardware shop, you’re going to find that TV may not work for you.  Instead, you may find that a local advertisement, or even direct mailing is going to work for you.  If you can test a majority of advertising options, you’ll find what works best for you and your business.  Just don’t give up after testing one alternative like the newspaper.

Calculating costs are hard when it comes to advertising.  It’s just like moving through a company, it’s hard to know what you’re going to pay, since everyone is going to be different.  If I were you, I would look and call up a few places to get a ballpark figure, this is really the only way you can find out.
