How to Become an Event Planner

Dreaming of owning your own business is a lot of people’s dream out there, but guess what?  99% of the people out there dream, and don’t even take the first step which is taking action.  What you’re going to find out is that if you take action, you’re going to have a high chance at succeeding, because you already took the first step.

If you’ve dreamed of becoming an event planner, I wanted to give you some tips, and pointers to get you on the right path to start your dream today.

Start up costs:

When you want to become an event planner, you need to sit back, and figure out what kind of services that you’re going to want to do.  Do you want to work with major corporations, or do you want to work with smaller shops?  Your start up costs are going to relatively small.  You will most likely need a computer / laptop, business cards, a phone, and small essentials.  You can easily do this job out of the home.

Skills and experience needed:

A degree isn’t necessary to start up an event planning business, but I would highly recommend working with a company that specializes in something like this.  Even if you work as an intern, or shadow worker.  Try it out for 6 months, and get how the industry works.  You don’t have to tell them that you want to start up your own business, but rather it’s always best to know the run arounds.

How to market:

The best way to market something like this is by word of mouth, and referrals.  Now, if you’re new, you’re probably wondering, “Well, I need to start off somewhere, right?”  Yes, that’s true.  What I would recommend is that you start off by offering very cheap prices to get people in.  Blow them away, and raise your prices as your clientele raises.

Some of the best ways to market would potentially be through services such as Facebook, Craigslist, and the Yellow Pages.  It doesn’t hurt to network with people in the industries as well.

Income Potential:

This is going to vary depending on how many clients that you’re going to work with.  This is a huge industry, and the bigger the parties, the more you’re going to make.  I would highly estimate that you can potentially make six figures within the 3rd – 5th year mark, as long as you work hard.
