How to Advertise Using Direct Mail

We all want our small businesses to take off and become successful one day.  One way to make this happen is by having great marketing techniques for your business.  Marketing is one of the best things you can do to help your business grow.  Not only does it help the business develop, but it also allows people to become more familiar with your business and draws more people towards your business.  There are several different ways to market for your business.  There is everything from newspaper ads, radio commercials, magazine ads, direct mail and the list goes on. 

If you’re mostly interested in direct mail and you’re looking to see how it works, you’ve come to the right place.  Below we have listed the steps to make your direct mail marketing successful.

Steps for direct mail:

  1. Find an audience to target. Do you want to specifically target college students away at college, people in retirement homes, children, etc?  This will help you determine where you want to send what you want to pass out.
  2. Come up with something.  Do you want to just pass out flyers, or perhaps a letter or specialty advertising gifts?  Find something that you think will draw their attention.
  3. If you’re mailing – Are you going to be mailing all of these?  If so, be sure to get the correct amount of stamps and envelopes so you can send them.
  4. Delivering - If you’re going to be delivering them by hand, be sure to create a map of the area that you’re going to do.  This will be good for future reference.  If you start seeing business that is good, stick with that same area, if not, consider somewhere else.  That is why it is good to remember where your customers may have come from.
  5. Have them tell you – Another good thing to do is write on the mail “Be sure to tell us how you heard about us”, or something along those lines.  So, if the customers do come and use you for business you will know.  This will also give you an idea whether or not they came due to your direct mail marketing.

Direct mail is not hard to do at all.  It is very easy, can be extremely cheap yet also expensive if you do a lot of mailing.  Find a way that works for you and consider the tips above for guidance.

    Also you could include on #3. mailing, to check for bulk postage carrier route savy businesses that can put this together cheaper than you could yourself because of the sheer volume they pruchase in bulk mailing.. or if they choose they can do it themselves by getting the carrier routes and being sure to have them all presorted into order.
