Getting a Business Checking Account
Whether you currently own a business or you’re thinking about starting one, one of the most important things you’re going to need is your checking/savings account. A business checking account is generally different than a consumer account. You’re going to see more fees and minimums. In order to avoid these fees, it’s important you follow a few tips to find the perfect checking account for your business.
How much will you be keeping in your account? – Most banks will require that you keep a certain amount in your account in order to avoid the minimum amount fee. This fee varies bank to bank but you’ll find that the online bank generally have lower fees than compared to those brick and mortar based banks.
How many checks will you write? – If you’re going to write a lot of checks each month, you’re going to want to look at how many checks and transactions they allow you to write. If you go over your transactions for a month, you’re going to see fees. Make sure you get an account that has enough transactions for you and your business. Don’t forget to think about the future as your business grows.
How many withdrawals will you make? – Besides writing checks, are you going to use your ATM card a lot? You’re going to have to look out for how many purchases you can make with your ATM card. Some banks will limit you to how many purchases you can make.
Is online banking important? – If you’re going to go with a brick and mortar type bank, chances are you’re going to have online banking but some older banks won’t have this feature. Make sure you ask the bank if they offer online banking. It’s going to make business a lot easier. You’ll be able to write checks online, track spending, etc all at your computer instead of walking into the bank.
Do you want interest?- There are some banks out there that will give you interest on your checking account. I know it sounds too good to be true but this is what some banks do in order to get a business to sign up. If interest is important to you, look out for an account that can give you a nice return.
There are thousands of banks out there that want your business. It never hurts to check online only banks as well because they are going to have the lowest fees compared to those you can walk into. Look at all the fees and compare them to the banks in the area. I would advise that you check out at least 5 banks before you make your business decision.
