Creating a Newsletter: How to Create One

Newsletters are a great way to communicate with the people on the outside world of your company, as well as the employees within your organization.  Whether you want to do it on paper, or maybe on the Internet, there are a few things that you’re going to have to know in order to create the perfect newsletter.

Start with the title

This is going to be the catchiest part of your newsletter, as it’s going to be at the top in big, bold letters.  If you run a little restaurant on the corner, don’t just stick with, “Bob’s Restaurant”, but instead think of something that is going to be fairly catchy.  Be creative here!

Tell stories

When I think of a newsletter, I generally don’t think of a fake “newspaper”.  I don’t want to hear about your sales product.  Sure, you can bring it up, but focus on giving out information, rather than pushing your products.

A local plastic surgery company that I went to would put their newsletters in their waiting room.  It was great reading material for those that are waiting.  You could read and get information on news worthy stories.

Offer incentives

Let’s say that we’re at that restaurant.  If you put the newsletter at every booth, be sure to offer a little incentive for them to take it with them.  You could offer a 10% off your next visit, or something along those lines.  To ensure that they won’t use it then, be sure to say valid 9/1 – 9/30 when it’s the month of August.

Be simple – reach the masses

Whether it’s a news story about someone that works with you, or you’re going to write about the current events, you don’t want to go over people’s head.  Just because you have an extensive vocabulary, it doesn’t mean that you have to use it.  Instead, dumb it down so people understand.

Catch their attention

While there is no design to a newsletter, you can be creative.  Products such as Microsoft Word and other word processing software have templates built right into them that you can take advantage of.

Now that you know what path to take, there are some other tips that you can follow to ensure that you have a killer newsletter.

  • Be consistent – there are people that want to read it monthly.
  • Assign an employee to be in charge of the newsletter.
  • Make sure you have people proofread it.
  • Study samples online to see what will work best for you.
