Business Etiquette in China
As a business owner, or even an employee for another company, you probably already know by now that every country is different when it comes down to traditions, manners, as well as etiquette.
Since China is a popular place to go when it’s time to do business, I wanted to point out some things you should look out for, when you want to be as proper as you can be in the country.
- They don’t use hand movements – try to avoid this.
- You shouldn’t touch a woman in public as a man.
- Try to avoid doing anything with your mouth, such as pointing or touching it.
- Don’t point, as they find this to be very offensive.
- They don’t tend to give gifts, or take them.
- If you want to give a good gift, they prefer that you give them pens.
- NEVER give them clocks, handkerchiefs, or anything that is white, blue, or black as they see this as death.
- When eating, have personal conversations, not business.
- Always be on time, as they view this as an very important asset.
- Women generally don’t drink during meals.
- When eating, try to leave some food on your plate. If you eat it all, they view that as you didn’t get enough.
- Don’t place your chopsticks upright in your bowl.
- Always try and taste the dishes. Never deny them.
- Let the host always eat and drink first.
- Always set appointments for business meetings. Again, be on time.
- You may find that some Chinese businessmen will wait for special / lucky days to sign contracts, etc.
- Have on person lead the meeting, never have more than one person talk.
Generally, when it comes to the meetings, the Chinese will view the first person to walk into the room as the leader. Make sure that your “leader” walks in first.
When talking about business, don’t jump too fast. Instead, you will want to slowly engage in business talk. Try and avoid jokes, as they may not translate properly.
Other tips
- Bring as many business cards as possible. You will find that you may meet more people than expected.
- Try and drink bottled waters at all time.
- Avoid talking about controversial topics such as religion and politics.
- Try and learn the basic Chinese words, this can help.
There are so many things to consider when it comes to etiquette, but you will find that if you try your hardest to learn the basics, you shouldn’t offend anyone, as they will know that you’re a foreigner.
