2 Step to a Business Computer
As a small business owner who does not need a large number of computers, you may be tempted to purchase computers at big-name electronics stores, especially when they are holding sales. While this may seem cost-effective at first, these machines may last a year or less. Most computers designed for home use, particularly notebooks, are made with less resilient materials. Manufacturers expect that these machines will be used lightly and will be replaced in two to three years. Computers marketed to businesses, on the other hand, tend to use metal rather than plastic casings and more robust (but expensive) parts. It’s worth the investment to get commercial systems up front; they will last longer and run better.
Research Industry-Specific Software
Many small-business industries, from restaurants to retail shops to construction business, have industry-specific software available. These programs can streamline your finances, business planning, even employee training. While a starting entrepreneur may be inclined to rely on basic programs like spreadsheets or databases, these are cumbersome and even if you develop a good system for yourself, it is difficult to train employees to use them. Research what software other small businesses in your industry use, and contact the software company about a free trial period to see if it helps your business.
Contract Your IT Service Provider
Look around for computer and networking companies, particularly small, locally-owned businesses, that offer service contracts. Service contracts can be a great time and energy-saver for entrepreneurs without computer expertise. Depending on your time and budget, many of these also offer complete packages of hardware and industry-specific software, too. However, even if you intend to purchase your own hardware and software, it is worth it to set up a service contract. For a monthly or yearly fee, you will have access to frequent, even unlimited service when anything goes wrong. Think of it as insurance, without it, a major computer meltdown could exhaust your entire yearly IT budget in days. With a contract, your cost will be predictable.
