Health insurance in crucial for anybody.  Whether you own a business or you’re going to get it while self employed, its important that you realize that without health insurance, you’re going to be putting yourself at a high risk.   We all know that a surgical procedure isn’t cheap!

Now, whether you have an office of 40 people or just yourself, I wanted to showcase some pointers that I have used when I was looking for a health insurance plan.   When you’re informed, you should be able to pick out the best plan for yourself, as well as your employees.

What kind of deductible do you want?

Like your car, you’re going to have to decide on what kind of deductible that you want.  This is the money that you’re going to have to pay up front before your insurance kicks in.

For example, if you have a $1,000 deductible for the year, you will be in charge for the first $1,000.  If that new knee surgery sets you back $50,000, you will only owe $1,000.  Now, keep in mind that you’re going to have to have 100% co-insurance as well.  Some companies will only pay, say 80% after your deductible.

How big is the network?

The reason some plans are so cheap sometimes is based on the fact that the network is relatively small.  If you go to a Doctor and you find out that they don’t take your insurance, you’re going to be screwed.  You won’t get the insurance rate and you’re going to find that if you’re not in the network, you’re going to have to pay the big bucks.

What are the perks?

Most insurance companies will flat out tell you what is going to be included in the plan.  You’re going to want to make sure that you look into the co-insurance, deductibles, your RX plan, the network, as well as what your monthly premiums are going to be.

Some companies have lousy plans, so you may find its not even worth the monthly premium.

How can I find the best insurance?

The best route to take is simply by using a website service such as eHealthInsurance that is free, or if you wish, you can consult with a local health insurance agent.  Make sure that you work with one that is going to compare more than one policy.  You don’t want to work with someone that is going to be biased toward one company.

By researching the policy, there’s no reason on why you shouldn’t be able to land a decent insurance policy for your self, or as I mentioned before, your company.  If you have any questions regarding your policy, be sure to meet with an individual health insurance rep.
