Direct Marketing is one of the best way to reach out to potential customers.  Not only can you pick out your demographic, you can be assured that you’re going to be marketing to a person that is truly interested in your product.

Now, are there any secrets to marketing directly?  How can I reach the right people?  These are all questions that many new business owners ask.  The tips listed below should give you a better understanding on how you can make your direct marketing campaigns a success.

1. You have to be unique

Many businesses out there still send out the old postcard with their number, company name, and more.  Honestly, this is rather boring.  If you act like everyone else, the customer is going to throw away your ad.  Instead, try and consider an envelope and letter.  It may take longer, but you’re going to see great results!

2.  Make the customer act fast

No matter what you’re offering, you may want to have that sense of urgency.  Let’s say that you own a gym.  Tell them that the first 25 customers are going to receive 25% off.  They have no idea where they are going to be in that 25, but if they are interested, they will act fast!

3.  Grab a competitor ad

How does your competitor advertise?  Take a look at some of their direct marketing campaigns if you can and see how they reach their customers.  You may find that their advertisements work, or maybe its a complete flop.  The rule of business is to always outdo your competitors!

4.  Purchase the right sales list

Some companies just stink when it comes to getting a direct marketing list.  I personally have used Sales Genie in the past and have been happy with them.  Keep in mind that all lists aren’t going to be accurate, as you’re always going to get mail bouncing back.  A good sales list is going to allow you to target the right people.

5.  Don’t make it seem corporate

Try and make your sales letter seem personal.  If you’re sending something out and it doesn’t have that personal touch, then you may want to try again.  Try and include their name, or something that will mean something to them.  You want to form some sort of connection here.

6.  Give out a coupon

Coupons are by far the best way to track your advertisements.  Even if you offer 5% off, its a great way to get people calling up.  Each coupon can be for reference to a certain ad.  For example, lets say that you advertise in 3 places.  For each place, have a unique coupon.

7.  Motivate them to buy

If you’re not good at writing a sales pitch, that’s fine.  You’re going to need to spend a few extra dollars to get someone that can write you a killer sales page.  Trust me, these people can be worth their weight in gold.  Have them write something up that is enough to motivate anyone to buy!

Direct marketing takes some time to get used to.  Your first campaign may be a huge hit, while your other one may be a dud.  Test, tweak, and test some more to find the best strategy that works for you.
