Starting a Greeting Card Business

Starting a greeting card business sounds like a good idea, and it can have a lot of potential since many people out there buy greeting cards for just about everything.  From birthdays to get well wishes, why aren’t you capitalizing on this industry?

If you’re thinking about starting up a greeting card business, I want to give you the low down on how you can start one as early as today, and you can see what it’s going to take in order to become successful in the industry.

Estimated Start Up Costs:

Starting up a greeting card business can be rather expensive.  Since you’re not going to want to print up your own cards on a ink jet printer, you’re going to most likely want to invest into a professional printer.  The bigger you get, the more space you’re going to need, so an office may be likely in the future as well.  The printing press, as well as everything else can easily run you $5,000+.

Recommended Skills:

The skills required here is really creativity, and illustrations.  You want to be creative, funny, unique, and you want to create something that’s going to make people want to buy your card.  What you can do is start up by looking at cards in your local stores, and see what makes them stand out to you.

Training Needed:

If you do decided to manage to purchase a printing press to print things such as greeting cards, you’re probably going to want to get training done on this machine.  It shouldn’t take you more than 2 days to learn how it functions.  Usually, when you purchase a machine like this, you can get someone to come out, and help you set up, and manage it.

Marketing Tips:

A greeting card business is a tough one, because many people are going to go out to the store, and purchase them.  You can either work your butt off, and distribute to major stores, or you can try to create your own online store.  You can sell on places like eBay, the Internet, and more.  Honestly, with a business such as this, connections are going to be huge, if you want to get your brand out there in the markets.

If you wish, you can also take the freelance route, where you can work for major greeting card corporations.  You can create the art, the sayings, and everything else.  The pay generally isn’t that hot, but you can make a small living by doing it.

How much can I make?

If you’re going to do freelance work, you can usually make anywhere from $25 to $250 an assignment, depending on how good you are.  If you’re going to take it to the next level, and distribute your goods, the profit potential is endless.  If you were to say, get your cards in a place like Wal-Mart, you could dominate in terms of revenue.

Recommended Books:

There are a few books that I think you should look into.  They both go into depth on how you can connect in the greeting card business, and how you can start your business right away today.

How to Deal with Difficult People

Dealing with difficult peopleDifficult people are going to be found everywhere.  Whether you’re managing them, or maybe you’re dealing with them at the local grocery store.  A common question that is ask quite often is, “How do I deal with difficult people?”

Today, let’s take a look at some simple tips that you can practice, when you want to deal with someone that just gives you attitude, or just refuses to listen.

Don’t take it personally - When you’re dealing with someone difficult, they may not listen to you, throw some insults your way, or just say really stupid things.  If this is the case, just let if fly over you, and not take it personally.  If you’re the boss, don’t take this!  In fact, fire them, because they are bringing the workplace moral down.

Don’t bother arguing - These type of people are always going to argue, or just try to form some sort of commotion.  Like a child, they just want some attention.  Your goal is to not give in.  You can just simply nod your head, and agree with a lot of things they say just to shut them up.

Don’t encourage them - Again, if they are arguing, don’t bring up older topics, and don’t even bother bringing something up that’s going to set them off.  Instead, you’re going to feed the wolves, and this is going to annoy you more.

They won’t change - What many people don’t get it is that a human being doesn’t change his/her personality over night.  It’s going to take years.  Someone that’s a slob, will always be dirty, a cheater will always cheat, etc.  You can’t change the person without getting professional help.  The lesson here is that you’re going to just have to deal with it.

Stand up to them – When they start crap with you, don’t sit there like a weak individual, but rather be authoritative.  Never fight back, rather wait for them to run out of energy.

Don’t let these type of people ruin your day.  If you’re the boss, you have to kick these people to the curb ASAP, because as I mentioned before, you’re soon going to find out that they won’t change.

If you’re looking for more information, I highly recommend a few books such as Coping with Difficult People, and Perfect Phrases for Dealing with Difficult People.

Cardboard Storage Boxes for your Business

Let’s face it, if you own a business, you’re going to be storing things away.  Whether you have to store away millions of receipts, or that boring paper work, it’s always best to save these things for a few years just to be safe.

Since you probably don’t want to go out and purchase top of the line boxes to collect dust in your basement, I wanted to recommend a few boxes that you should consider when you’re looking to file away boxes.

  • Fellowes Bankers Box: This is one of the highest rated based box.  In a typical box set, you can get 12 of them.  It has a double bottom, and is very easy to set up.
  • Fellowes Bankers Recycled Box: If you want to get a recycled version, not only are you going to save the environment, you’re going to save a few pennies as well.  This is basically as the box I talked above before.
  • BCW Short Book Storage Box: This book is designed for storing comic books, but what you’re going to find out is that it fits more than just comics.  It’s ideal for magazines, and papers.  It’s for those that don’t need a lot of space.  If you’re going to be filing a lot of papers, I would recommend something else.
  • Fellowes 57054FF Bankers Box: This box is a little different than the rest.  It has simple drawstrings on the end and makes for easy storage.  There’s plenty of space in this box, trust me!

Storage boxes are essential for any business, and I wouldn’t recommend going out and purchasing those expensive boxes because as I mentioned before, they are just going to sit somewhere dark, and collect dust.
